First test of the new Kawasaki Z1000SX Tourer in the UK and the roads around Lincolnshire were icy, cold and damp – a great "real world"test for the new Kawasaki.
MCN got their hands on the very first bike of its type in the UK and to say they were impressed is an understatement. The opening line on the front cover declares that the ABS and pannier equipped bike "blows us away"…and the news gets better when you turn to pages 2/3/4 and 5 of the 8 December issue.
Against one of its logical competitors, Trevor Franklin of MCN conducted the world's first group test and the signs were good as the competitor was declared "crude by comparison".
Opening line of the review? "Kawasaki's new Z1000SX proved it will be the sports tourer to beat in 2011…"
Recognising that the Kawasaki stand at the recent Motorcycle Live! event at the NEC was deluged with fans for SIX new machines from the Japanese manufacturer, the question on the lips of visitors was naturally whether the stunning looks would be matched by equally strong touring credentials. Answer? - According to MCN at least – a resounding YES.
Having a controllable 136PS, the Kawasaki easily won the 60mph roll on test in the worlds most popular motorcycle newspaper, a test which accurately represents the most common overtaking manoeuvre on a fast A road – one of the natural hunting grounds of this new style of machine which will attract many ex Supersport riders as well as committed touring and sport riding fans.
Styling issues such as the three way adjustable screen were welcomed and the chassis package met with equal praise, MCN judging the whole ensemble as "working beautifully", moving on to say.."Every yard covered, regardless of speed, is a near joy…"
Safe to say that Chief Road Tester of MCN, Trevor Franklin, was impressed with the Z1000 SX Tourer. Given the sheer amount of bikes he rides for a living, that is indeed a compliment.
